2020 F-150 vs Toyota Tundra

Toyota Tundra pickup relies primarily on messages of safety and reliability, possibly because it has the oldest design among light-duty pickups - the current generation of Tundra debuted in 2007. It has no regular cab model - only Double Cab and CrewMax - and offers only one engine in 2020. Let's take a look at the F‑150 wins against this aging rival.

ADVANTAGE: FORD

Choose Your Engine

20_FRD_F15_40758_KR_1280

Let's start with performance: F‑150 offers a higher torque rating with the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 turbocharged engine than the Tundra V8 engine. But the main advantage over Tundra is selection - Ford offers a wide variety of engines with six total, including a diesel. Toyota has only one engine for its 2020 pickup: the 5.7L V8. That's a lot of displacement, but the Ford EcoBoost and V8 engines hold their own - or beat their V8. Also, these F‑150 engines are paired with the 10‑speed automatic transmission while Tundra offers a 6‑speed automatic only.

Fuel Efficient

In addition to topping Tundra in performance, F-150 offers superior EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings. F‑150 features a high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy body, which helps limit weight without giving up strength and durability. An example: F‑150 SuperCrew with 4x2 and V8 weighs 4,641 lbs. The Tundra SR5 Crew Cab with V8 weighs a beefy 5,340 lbs. (almost 700 lbs. heavier, if you're doing the math). Those extra pounds affect fuel economy.(2)

Raptor vs. TRD Pro

C10180720_F150_Raptor_DdFrntRockyTerrain_mj_1_1280

Both brands offer dedicated off-road 4x4 models, but F‑150 Raptor has advantages over Tundra TRD Pro. The high-output 3.5L EcoBoost V6 in Raptor generates more horsepower and torque than the standard 5.7L V8 TRD Pro engine. Raptor provides exclusive FOX Racing Shox™ along with Trail Control, which is a cruise control system for low-speed, off-road use and is not offered on Tundra. Raptor also features more favorable ground clearance and departure angle than TRD Pro.

Towing Leader

F‑150 offers a substantial advantage in max. available towing with its 3.5L EcoBoost V6 - outperforming Tundra with both 4x2 and 4x4 trucks. One more factor to consider: the maximum Tundra trailering rating is achieved with a 4x2 Double Cab while the Ford maximum ratings are achieved with the SuperCrew models.

Payload Advantage

While we're talking about capacity, here's another way F‑150 proves it's Built Ford Tough - Ford delivers a max. available payload of 3,270 lbs. in pickups equipped with the available 5.0L V8 engine with the Heavy-Duty Payload Package available on XL and XLT models. Tundra maxes out at 1,730 lbs., provided by its 4x2 Double Cab model.

Backing Up Made Easier

Most truck manufacturers address the challenge of backing up a trailer by designing better mirrors. Ford, though, is managing the problem with technology. Available Pro Trailer Backup Assist(6) allows the driver to rotate a knob in the direction they want the trailer to go and lets the truck do most of the work. Tundra doesn't offer a backup assist system.

POINT

For towing customers, Toyota provides a standard trailer hitch, standard integrated Trailer Brake Controller and standard Trailer Sway Control. Also, the optional Tundra 38-gallon tank is larger than the F-150 pickup's 36-gallon available tank.

COUNTERPOINT

F-150 outshines Tundra when evaluating the bigger towing picture.

F-150 XL and XLT customers can order the Class IV Trailer Tow Package - or it becomes standard on the Lariat model, providing the Smart Trailer Tow Connector, 4-pin/7-pin wiring harness and trailer hitch receiver. Lariat also includes Ford Co-Pilot360, which gives customers trailer tow coverage with the BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and Cross-Traffic Alert. Tundra doesn't have this feature.

The bottom line is, F-150 can simply tow more weight than Tundra as noted above. Also, when Ford customers select the available Trailer Tow Package or Max Trailer Tow Package, they get the innovative Pro Trailer Backup Assist,(6) a feature that Tundra can't match.

Finally, Toyota claims its optional 38-gal. tank helps prepare the truck for work or weekend trips. But when factoring in the F-150 pickup's fuel economy advantage,(7) our truck with its 5.0L V8 has a maximum range of 684 miles, while Tundra with the 5.7L V8 has a maximum range of 570 miles.
